Thanksgiving Cooking Safety Tips from the Lombard Fire Department

Thanksgiving is the peak day for home cooking fires, and the Lombard Fire Department reminds residents to stay safe in the kitchen, especially when using turkey fryers, which can pose serious risks if not handled properly.

To help prevent accidents, the Fire Department offers these safety reminders:

  • Use turkey fryers outdoors on a sturdy, level surface and keep children and pets at least 3 feet away.
  •  Avoid overfilling the pot. Test the correct amount of oil by placing the turkey in the pot with water first.
  • Fully thaw the turkey before frying to prevent dangerous oil splatter.
  • Monitor the oil temperature closely to avoid overheating and potential fires.
  • Use long, protective cooking gloves because fryer pots, lids, and handles become extremely hot.

A collection bin will be available 24/7 in front of the Public Works building (1051 S Hammerschmidt) from November 26th through January 19th for residents to drop off old or unwanted holiday lights, extension cords, and scrap wiring.

Please remove all plastic decorations, clips, or bags before placing items in the bin to help prevent equipment jams during processing. The Village has partnered with Elgin Recycling to provide this service.
