Lombard Police Launch Kids Summer Safety Challenge
This summer, the Lombard Police Department is launching the Kids Summer Safety Challenge, a new initiative to encourage children in the community to practice safe habits while riding around town. The program rewards kids who make safe choices with a custom wooden challenge coin, redeemable for a free mini-Blizzard at the Dairy Queen located at 205 S. Main Street. Officers will be on the lookout for young riders who are wearing helmets and following basic safety rules. When they see a child riding responsibly, they may hand out a Kids Summer Safety Challenge coin as a fun reward for those smart decisions. The program will run through the end of summer or while supplies last. The Kids Summer Safety Challenge encourages children to: - Wear a properly fitting helmet
- Look both ways before crossing intersections
- Use hand signals when turning
- Walk their wheels in crowded areas, including downtown Lombard
- Ride in a safe, alert and respectful manner
As a reminder, riders of e-scooters must be 18 years of age or older, per Illinois state law. For information about local e-bike and e-scooter regulations, as well as the Village’s Walk Your Wheels program, visit villageoflombard.org/escooters. Parents and guardians are encouraged to review these safety guidelines with their children to help them ride responsibly and stay safe while enjoying the outdoors.

Fire Department Warns Residents of Fireworks Use As the Fourth of July celebrations approach, the Lombard Fire Department is reminding residents about the risk of serious injury associated with fireworks use. Every year, preventable accidents occur, resulting in burn injuries, property damage, and even loss of life. According to a report by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the number of injuries from fireworks has increased overall between 2008 and 2023. However, recent data show a steady decline since the peak in 2020, when public displays were canceled due to the pandemic. In 2023, at least eight people died from fireworks-related incidents, and an estimated 9,700 were injured in incidents involving fireworks.

Residents Encouraged to Leave Fireworks to the Professionals With the Fourth of July weekend approaching, the Lombard Police Department urges residents to leave fireworks to the professionals. Not only is the use of illegal fireworks dangerous and can lead to serious injury, but the loud noise can also cause distress for our community’s children, seniors, veterans and pets.
Additionally, Illinois law prohibits the use of consumer fireworks, including bottle rockets, roman candles, firecrackers, and other explosive devices. Only novelty items such as smoke bombs, sparklers and poppers are permitted. If you see or hear fireworks being used in your neighborhood, please call 911 to report it. Calls will be prioritized based on available resources and public safety needs.
