Lombard Police Chief Tom Wirsing Announces Retirement

Deputy Chief Grage Appointed as New Police Chief

After a distinguished 30-year career with the Lombard Police Department, Police Chief Tom Wirsing has announced his retirement, effective March 3, 2025. He will be succeeded by Deputy Chief Joe Grage on March 4, 2025.

Chief Wirsing joined the Lombard Police Department in 1995 and has served in various leadership roles, including sergeant and lieutenant, before being promoted to deputy chief in 2011 and chief of police in 2023. Throughout his tenure, he has played a key role in maintaining the department’s CALEA certification by implementing best practices and advancing innovative policing strategies. His leadership has helped strengthen the department’s commitment to professional excellence and has provided continued support to the officers of the Lombard Police Department.

The Village of Lombard has announced that Deputy Chief Joe Grage will become the next police chief upon Chief Wirsing’s retirement. Grage brings more than 23 years of experience with the Lombard Police Department, having previously served as a sergeant and lieutenant before being promoted to deputy chief in 2019. Plan and Practice Your Home Fire Escape Plan

When a fire occurs, there is no time to waste. In less than 30 seconds, a small flame can become a major fire. That’s why the Lombard Fire Department urges residents to create and practice a home escape plan with their families.

Identify two escape routes from every room and establish a designated meeting place outside. For multi-story homes, consider a UL-approved collapsible ladder for upper-level exits. Practice E.D.I.T.H. (Exit Drills in the Home) by sounding the smoke alarm, crawling low under smoke, and checking doors for heat before opening them. Get out first, then call 9-1-1.

Review and practice your plan at least twice a year to ensure everyone knows what to do in an emergency.

Winter Reminders

As winter continues, residents are reminded to stay prepared for snow and extreme cold. Snowfall, icy conditions, and freezing temperatures can create challenges for travel and home maintenance.

Please review the following reminders and resources:

Snow Plowing

Visit our Snow Plowing page for detailed information about how the Public Works Department performs snow plowing, as well as frequently asked questions related to snow operations.

Residential Street Parking

After 1" of snowfall, residential street parking is not allowed. Residents are encouraged to avoid street parking during any winter weather conditions. Cars parked on streets greatly reduce the speed and efficiency of plowing and salting efforts. Requests for overnight street parking will not be granted during winter weather events.

Warming Centers

Warming centers are available to residents when triggered by extreme temperatures. View Dupage County Warming Centers near Lombard on the 211 DuPage County webpage.

Frozen Water Pipes

Often times in extremely cold weather, pipes in your house may freeze. See the Frozen Water Pipes page for tips to avoid frozen pipes and what to do if a pipe does freeze.

If you received a survey, your participation is important. Polco ensures that all responses remain confidential and that data is analyzed objectively.
